Though Scorpion initially started off as a bad guy in the series, as the video game franchise has gone on he’s slowly changed from a villainous viperhead into one of it’s best anti-heroes.

We begin 17th Century Japan at the home of Hanzo Hasashi and see the man who would later become him have his son and wife killed.

Maybe you should get over her…ey.

This is carried out by Be-Han a man who would later go onto become Sub Zero, the mortal enemy of Scorpion.

In the game canon Hanzon was one of the finest warriors in the Shirai Ryu Ninja Clan and he was a master at hand to hand combat as well as using a rope and dagger…or well maybe a trowl…it’s a garden trowl isn’t it.

Be-Han and Hanzo go head to head and the former bests him, murdering him too in the process.

As Hanzo dies he hears the cries of his daughter who is saved by the thunder god and appointed protector of the Earthrealm Rayden.

Hanzo’s soul descends into the Netherrealm and from the games we know that it’s here where his spirit became a vengeful specter, hell bent on Just-ice. Over the centuries Scorpion sought vengeance on those that murdered his family and this led to him working with villains like Quan Chi. He’s one of the most interesting characters in the entire franchise and from the off I absolutely loved the authenticity that this movie brought with it. Starting it off in Japan was an inspired choice and it really give the movie some grit to it. Though he doesn’t appear in the film that much he’s still one of it’s key characters and most important people.

Now the movie revolves primarily around the outworld who are now close to Cushing Earthrealm due to achieving nine consecutive wins against their champions in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Should they win the tenth they’ll make 2020 look like 1999 and thus the forces of Shang Tsung will do whatever they can to ensure victory.

We join Cole Young, an ex MMA champion who is haunted by visions of Hanzo. Possessing the mark of the dragon he becomes very important to the plot.

It’s revealed that Cole is actually a descendant of Hanzo and for centuries there has existed a prophecy that has stated that his blood would unite a new generation of Earthrealm fighters to protect the planet. Aware of this prophecy Shang Tsung sends out his forces to kill all the Earthrealm champion which can be identified by this distinctive dragon mark. He wants to win before the game even begins and I love how this character who was pretty much a cheat in the games was also a cheat in the story. Bit of a reach.
